Description
Recent plaster casts of dead body cavities covered in pumice from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and killed 'almost' instantly by deadly pyroclastic flows in AD 79 in Pompeii, Italy. When I came across the scene I cried when I captured this dramatic image and for at least 5 minutes afterwards. I read Charles Pelligrino's amazing non fiction book Ghosts of Vesuvius for the complete story. The current movie Pompeii misses the mark and does not compare to the book. This image frequently appears in travel books and has been enhanced as a fine art piece. Have lots of tissue handy.
